BUILDING STANDARDS

Building standards have improved radically in Turkey in recent years. This is due to tighter building regulations and a new inspection regime brought in since the devastating earthquake in 1999. Foreign buyers and their sophisticated demands are also pushing up the standards. This information should be factored in when choosing a property as there may often be a big difference in quality between a new, off plan or resale property over 5 years old.

However older properties may well be in better positions and have better views so you will have to view and compare. Some older properties may not meet the standard requirements for earthquake resistance and renovation costs may well negate any savings you have made so you will have to get quotes and surveys made by local builders before you make a decision. Of course, much older properties, traditional stone houses that have stood the test of time for centuries should not pose a problem.
